The service of Nine Lessons and Carols began in 1880. It was started by Bishop Edward White Benson as a way to attract the Christmas crowds away from the pubs and into the pews. After Benson’s appointment as Bishop of Canterbury in 1883, the service gained a wider following throughout the U.K.

Our service on Sunday, December 7 at 7:00pm offers us a time of reflection and anticipation during the Advent season; as White wrote: “not to celebrate Christmas, but to expect it.” A festive reception to follow.

Based on medieval monastic offices, this service takes place in the evening, marking the passing of another day. Sung primarily by the choir, Evensong allows those gathered an opportunity for contemplation, prayer, and inspiration. Join us as we celebrate the Ascension of Christ into heaven.
