Partnership at Shoesmith School

Shoesmith is the public elementary school right across Kenwood Park from St. Paul & the Redeemer. SPR and Shoesmith have done many projects together over the years to support the important learning and growth that happens there. The Chicago Public Schools budget does not allow for a robust arts program, so every Lent we raise money for Shoesmith and recruit volunteers from SPR to help in a variety of ways.

After experiencing “Musical Mornings”, where musicians and singers perform outside of the school 15 minutes before the school day begins, the children requested a choir of their own. Funded fully by SPR, Shoesmith has contracted with the Chicago Children’s Choir to run its choir program. The choir performs at least once a year at SPR during Sunday services.

The Garden

A grant written by one of our parishioners established a Butterfly Garden and raised beds for vegetables, herbs, flowers and strawberries. The garden space is used by the teachers for science, math, art and outdoor performances. The Green Team (an afterschool program) plants, harvests, weeds and cleans with our help.

The Arts

SPR helps fund a variety of projects such as the mosaic project surrounding the entrance, and classroom projects led by SPR artists. In return, the children have provided art shows for our Chapel.

We work one on one with the K/1st grade students once a week. Coordinated by one of SPR’s parishioners with the teachers, each student has a journal, a box of crayons, games and puzzles and access to lots of books.

Truly a cooperative relationship, Shoesmith students have collected and donated canned goods and foods for SPR’s Food Pantry.
